Los Angeles, also known as L. A., is a major city in California and the second largest urban area in the United States. It is home to Hollywood and its entertainment industry, numerous singers, actors, celebrities and other artists. But why is it called the City of Angels?The answer is twofold.
Firstly, the initials of the city are L. A., which stands for Los Angeles. Secondly, Los Angeles means “los angeles” in Spanish, which translates to “the angels”. This is why it is often referred to as the City of Angels.Los Angeles has a warm and sunny climate, which has attracted many people over the years.
This has earned it another nickname: City of Flowers and the Sun. It also has an artificial port that has become one of the busiest ports in the United States. This has contributed to its success as a major city.The charter of the City of Los Angeles, ratified by voters in 1999, created a system of neighborhood advisory councils that would represent the diversity of stakeholders. These councils are relatively autonomous and spontaneous in the sense that they identify their own boundaries, establish their own statutes and elect their own officials.In addition to rail service provided by Metrolink and Los Angeles County, The Los Angeles Metropolitan Transportation Authority has Amtrak intercity passenger trains.
The city's main train station is Union Station, just north of downtown. In addition, the city contracts directly for local and commuter bus service through the Los Angeles Department of Transportation, or LADOT.Los Angeles was founded in 1781 by Spanish governor Felipe de Neve and became part of Mexico in 1821 after the Mexican War of Independence. After the war between Mexico and the United States in 1848, Los Angeles and the rest of California were bought by treaty and became part of the United States.Los Angeles is a truly global city involved with business, commerce, entertainment, culture, sports, fashion, media, science, research, medicine, education and technology worldwide. It is famous for being the center of many important forms of entertainment including sports, television and music.Despite congestion in the city, the average daily commute time for travelers in Los Angeles is shorter than in other major cities including New York City, Philadelphia and Chicago.
Air quality issues in Los Angeles and other major cities led to the passage of early national environmental legislation including the Clean Air Act.In addition to these 90 neighborhood councils there are numerous additional colleges and universities outside the city limits in the greater Los Angeles area including the Claremont Colleges consortium which includes some of the most selective liberal arts colleges in the United States.
