The official name, City of Los Angeles, has been the official name of the city since it at least became an American city in 1850. With a population of 3,847,400 people and an area of 1,200 square kilometers (460 square miles), Los Angeles is the city with the second largest population in the United States after New York, surpassing Chicago in the 1970s. It's also the largest city in California.

Because it is built on a fault line, which crosses the center, it has few skyscrapers and tall structures and is one of the most dispersed cities in the world.The greater Los Angeles area is home to many movie stars and many of the biggest rock bands in the history of the United States. Los Angeles has Spanish and Mexican influences because it is a former colony of Mexico and Spain. It is a diverse city with many ethnic groups, including Mexicans, Japanese, Koreans, Vietnamese, Salvadorans, Iranians and Armenians.Mexican and Spanish architecture can be seen in Los Angeles.

A lot of celebrities live in Los Angeles. It is known for being the entertainment capital of the world. A lot of movies, TV shows, and fashion shows take place in Los Angeles. From beaches to mountains, it has a lot to offer. The Santa Monica Mountains cross the city and separate it into the San Fernando Valley to the north and the Los Angeles Basin to the south. The Los Angeles River also flows through the city at about 51 miles (82 km).Los Angeles moves about a quarter of an inch (6.3 millimeters) eastward each year due to its tectonic plates and geography of uneven terrain. This brings Los Angeles and San Francisco closer to 2.5 inches (64 mm) each year.

The climate in Los Angeles is a Mediterranean climate with warm and dry summers and milder and rainier winters. The weather is different depending on how far you are from the ocean so places near the beach don't tend to be as hot in summer.It's very rare for temperatures to drop below freezing near the coast but more can occur inland. The city receives about 15 inches (380 mm) of rain each year although this amount can change a lot from year to year. Snow is very rare except on mountain tops where some light snow can occasionally fall.Los Angeles has many very long beaches such as Venice Beach.

Many visitors go to Hollywood which is home to the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Mann's (Grauman) Chinese Theater, a large cinema and L. A. It also has many great museums such as L. A.

Another attraction is the zoo in the city of Los Angeles which is home to wild cougars.The easiest and most obvious origin for why it's called Los Angeles is a direct translation from Spanish which means “The Angels”.
